HELLO, I'M RICHARD AGER. WELCOME TO THIS SPECIAL EDITION OF NH OUTLOOK. WE'RE AT THE NEW HAMPSHIRE STATE VETERANS CEMETERY, THE FINAL RESTING PLACE FOR THOUSANDS OF MEN AND WOMEN WHO SERVED. YET NOT SO LONG AGO, THERE WAS NO PLACE IN STATE FOR NEW HAMPSHIRE SERVICEMEN AND WOMEN TO RECEIVE A FULL MILITARY BURIAL.
TRACK OVER B-ROLL: That changed in 1997 when the state set aside 104 acres here in Boscawen. Since then, this place has become a memorial - to the individuals interred here - and to the great events in which so many of them played their part. Encircled by flags, this trail is a Walkway of History -

LIVE/INTERVIEW: STUART WALLACE IS A PROFESSOR OF HISTORY AND THE AUTHOR OF THE HISTORICAL SUMMARIES INSTALLED AT EACH OF THE 20 STATIONS ALONG THE WALKWAY.
WE STOP AT 3-4 STATIONS AND TALK ABOUT THE STORIES. HOW THEY WERE CHOSEN - WHAT TO INCLUDE, WHAT TO LEAVE OUT. FEEDBACK.
THANK STUART WALLACE

THE MEMORIAL WALKWAY COMMEMORATES AN ENTIRE HISTORY - NEARLY 4 CENTURIES OF NEW HAMPSHIRE MILITARY ENGAGEMENTS. IT EVOKES THE IMMEASURABLE SACRIFICE OF MANY GENERATIONS. OUR NEXT STORY INVOLVES THOSE WHO CANNOT BE BURIED - FOR THEY WERE LOST AT SEA. MANY OF YOU HAVE PROBABLY SEEN THE STATUE IN HAMPTON KNOWN AS "THE LADY" - BUT AS JOHN CLAYTON TELLS IT, YOU MAY NOT KNOW HER STORY.

THE LADY RESTS ON A NATURAL LEDGE AT HAMPTON BEACH. THAT SITE WAS PREPARED BY THE STATE'S HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT ON ORDERS OF ITS COMMISSIONER, FRANK MERRILL. IN WORLD WAR TWO, HE WAS GENERAL FRANK MERRILL, LEADER OF MERRILL'S MARAUDERS, AN ARMY UNIT THAT FOUGHT BEHIND ENEMY LINES IN BURMA. IN 1999, WE BROADCAST THE STORY OF A DIFFERENT KIND OF MEMORIAL IN HONOR OF MERRILL AND HIS MARAUDERS.

SINCE THAT STORY WAS FIRST BROADCAST, A NUMBER OF MARAUDERS HAVE PASSED ON, AS HAVE FORMER GOV. HUGH GREGG AND MRS. FRANK MERRILL. BUT THE MARAUDERS DEDICATION SIGN REMAINS ON GENERAL MERRILL'S BRIDGE - WHICH IS UNDERGOING REPAIRS AND RESTORATION IN ORDER TO SERVE ANOTHER 50 YEARS.

Track: The New Hampshire veteran's cemetery has long years of service ahead of it. With more than 100 acres, it has used little of the space available. But with more than 130,000 veterans living in the state, the burial sites will grow in numbers.
LIVE/INTERVIEW: MIKE HORNE BECAME SUPERINTENDANT OF THE CEMETERY IN 2008.
MIKE - YOU'VE DONE A LOT OF YEARS OF HONOR GUARD DUTY - WHAT IS THE VALUE TO THE LIVING OF THESE CEREMONIES?
TALK ABOUT GROWTH OF CEMETERY, HOW MANY VETERANS CHOOSE IT, WHETHER FAMILIES CAN BE BURIED WITH THEIR RELATIVES.
THANK YOU MIKE HORNE.

Standup: Each veteran has their own reasons for choosing a military cemetery. In 2001, Vietnam veteran Richard Ducey explained his choice after being diagnosed with terminal cancer caused by exposure to Agent Orange.
Bite: tape OL26 00:00;08 I've selected the NH Veterans Cemetery as my final resting place even though I was eligible to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery. I had at one time thought of doing that, but it was more important to me to be buried here. When I left to fight for my country, I had a sense not only of fighting for America in general - most of which I had never seen - but fighting for NH, for my community, for my neighborhood. That was about all the experience I'd had at 18 years old. But as I look back on it, it occurs to me that I'm very proud to live in NH. I've traveled all over the world but I always come back here. This is home.

RICHARD DUCEY CHOSE A MILITARY BURIAL EVEN THOUGH HIS SERVICE LED TO HIS ILLNESS. HE SAID HE WOULD DO IT ALL AGAIN WITH NO REGRETS. OUR FINAL STORY, WHICH WE FIRST BROADCAST IN 2001, IS ABOUT A PERSON WHO SERVED, BUT THOUGHT NO ONE WOULD REMEMBER.

AS WE HAVE SEEN, THERE ARE MANY KINDS OF MEMORIALS. FROM TOWERING MONUMENTS TO A HIGHWAY SIGN TO THE SIMPLEST GRAVESTONE. ALL ARE MEANT TO REMIND THE LIVING OF THOSE WHO WENT BEFORE - AND DID SOMETHING MEANINGFUL ALONG THE WAY. LOOK AROUND THESE 100 ACRES IN BOSCAWEN - THE SIGNS ARE EVERYWHERE.
